Kicking it at Kick Pleat

Bonjour, mes amies! Kay B here with another article for you all. I hope you all are feeling more rested than I am at the start of the new week- I feel like I have been on the run every day since last week, and this weekend was no different.

On the bright side, I was kept busy with lots of fun and exciting activities- one of them being going to Kick Pleat in Austin to interview designer Miranda Bennett!

Photography by Angelica C.

We had a great chat together, and you can read all about that interview here.

For those of you who are don’t know, Kick Pleat is a women’s clothing, shoes and accessories store with an airy aesthetic and clean design that will transport you to the finest of high-fashion dreams.

The exterior and interior design of the store speak to the vibe of the clothes and accessories that grace the racks and shelves of Kick Pleat. A woman will walk in through their doors and immediately feel empowered to breathe life into her unique persona through the many ensembles and pieces that Kick Pleat has to offer. I had so much fun looking around and venturing through the shop.

Each section of the store has its own voice and speaks to each customer uniquely and individually. Just as every woman has her individuality, you won’t find anything like what you will discover within the white mod walls of Kick Pleat.

My favorite parts of the store were the dressing room and the shoe stadium, by far. Can we just talk about this stadium for a minute? Goals, without a doubt.

Of course, I want to share my outfit with you all from my Kick Pleat visit. It was a daytime event, so I decided not to dress up too much while keeping it light and classy on sweltering spring day. (Seriously, “spring” in Texas is in the upper 80’s…)

Top: Candie’s | Shorts: H&M | Booties: | Coach | Sunglasses: Aldo | Purse: Mix No. 6

It was such a beautiful day outside, though I’m almost certain that Texas skipped the spring season and went straight for summer. So I wanted to wear light and loose garments while still looking put together. I chose for my makeup look of the day to be a light one as well, in regards to color tones as well as application. The Mac Pro Longwear foundation is my holy grail on beating hot days such as Friday. Let me know if you want to hear more about my makeup and skincare routine!

Can you tell that I was (and still am) obsessed with this shoe stadium? I can’t get over it- and don’t believe I ever will…

My outfit for this  day was pretty neutral in my blouse and booties, so I brought a pop of color to my ensemble with my cinch waist shorts from H&M. I love these because while they are a longer pair of shorts, they’re loose and airy enough to wear on the hottest of day. Not to mention, the cinched waist is not only a beautiful addition of detail, but is also very flattering. When worn with a loose shirt tucked in or even a fitted blouse, it draws attention to your waistline and makes it look smaller in your mid-section

If that doesn’t win you over, then you should know that these shorts have pockets. AND a drawstring bow. You’re welcome.

I had so much fun visiting Kick Pleat, interviewing Miranda Bennett, and shooting for this article. I’m so happy to be back on the blog and can’t wait to share even more with you guys. Look out for some exciting new additions and changes around here soon… I think you guys will like what I have in store for you all. (: Don’t forget to keep up with me on all my socials (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) and very soon we’ll be adding YouTube to the mix! Also, big thanks to Angie for the photography- go ahead and check out all of her photography here.

Sending lots of love to you all, and wishing you a wonderful rest of your day or night! Until next time, lovies…

Kay B xx

Miranda Bennett x Kick Pleat

Hello hello, my darlings, and happy Monday!

To much surprise, I am not dead, but I have returned to “slay the game” yet again. (; That’s what I hear the kids saying nowadays, so I thought I’d be a cool kid and give it a try.

I know I took a long hiatus from The Studded Collar, and I was surprised at how much time had passed since I was last here on these pastel pages. However, as of late, I have been planning a lot of exciting new changes and even more fun content that I am beyond excited to share with you all. Eventually, I will publish an article detailing more of what has passed and what is yet to come, but until then, stay tuned for today’s exciting share.

On Friday, I had the chance to meet and interview Austin-based designer Miranda Bennett at Kick Pleat. Ms. Bennett is an Austin based fashion designer focused on sustainable fashion. All of her garments are produced here in the USA and the textiles are naturally dyed in-house. Meeting such a talented designer was such an honor and I had so much fun chatting with and getting to know her. Read on to learn more about the local designer, brand, and what keeps her inspired.

Kay B: You focus on sustainable fashion – what made you gravitate to plant dyed apparel?

Miranda Bennett: I think the main [idea] for me was reducing the toxic effects of creating apparel. The garment industry is not known for its environmental consciousness. Thankfully, recently, it has become a lot more of a focal point, and there’s been a lot more transparency in people’s production process. I mean, for me, there’s that side of it- the environmental impact – but from the aesthetic side of it, I just felt like the pigments and the colors I could get from natural dyes were really special and had a really unique quality to them. I also love that we can formulate the colors in-house and on a small scale. I think that gives us a nice advantage in terms of being a small line because we can create things that are unique to the studio that we formulate and dye ourselves.

KB: You call your pieces “seasonless” and I found that to be a term I gravitated towards more than timeless. What you define a  seasonless piece to be?

MB: My thinking with that is that it’s something that you can literally wear through the seasons and year round whether it’s a matter of layering it differently or accessorizing it differently. It also, to me, indicates that it is something you are going to have season after season. So the idea is that these are like heirlooms or forever pieces so their things that you would have in your closet and draw on the following week, the following month, or the following years. It refers to a “wearablity,” but also something that you’ll have past a certain trend point or a certain season.

KB: So would you say that they’re pretty breathable and easy to layer?

MB: All of the fabrics are natural fibers, so inherently, they’re gonna be more breathable. We use primarily silk, linen and cotton.

KB: You like to say that there’s a dialogue between all the editions that you release – how do you maintain a fluid conversation between your pieces?

MB: We basically have core silhouettes that are the linchpin of the collection. What I mean by that dialogue is that with each new edition, we’re re-examining the cut and the fit of those core pieces, and we’re going to execute them in new fabrics or new color ways, or play with the proportions. That continuous dialogue means here’s the style that’s been a really well established piece of the collection- how does it react we alter the length or add a sleeve, do it in a different fabric… or even seeing it in a different colorway. But it can also inform other styles that can kind of gravitate around those core pieces, so as we introduce new silhouettes, there are definitely departures from our existing core styles.

KB: Do you like to sometimes look at the first edition and see how it has progressed to your most recent one, then examine that flow to get inspiration from that?

MB: Yeah, definitely! And that’s something that even on our Instagram- every time we share a different piece of apparel, we also reference when it was first introduced in that fabrication just to kind of hearken back to that and contextualize those pieces.

KB: Where do you get your inspiration from when you’re coming up with new editions and new pieces?

MB: The launching point is the way that a garment drapes on a woman’s body. It’s really less about having a very literal theme and more about wearablity, and drape, and ease and how something can be flattering to different body types. A starting point is pieces that we already have and kind of looking at how they’ve worked, what was successful about them. There’s definitely also those flashes of seeing a style, or shape, or color and then kind of inform that. It’s always, for me, going to go back to drape. I’m not a sketcher, I’m a draper, so for me it comes from being very hands on and seeing how something wears.

KB: Lastly, I have to ask- what is your favorite thing about fashion in Austin? It’s very quirky and different from other cities in Texas like Dallas, where I’m from.

MB: I think just the personality of people’s style. I think everyone here has a very personal approach to how they dress and carry themselves. It’s not necessarily very trend based, it’s very unique and idiosyncratic. [Also] the acceptance that comes with it- that people can dress and present themselves how they feel is appropriate to them rather than feeling like they have to have a homogeneous style or trend based style.

A big thank you to Miranda Bennett for taking some time to chat with me, and to Kick Pleat for hosting Ms. Bennett and helping get us together for the interview. We also got to vlog a bit, and that video will be up on my YouTube channel soon. (: (Yes, I have a YouTube channel! More details on that to come…)

If you want to see the garments and editions that Miranda Bennett has brought to life, feel free to visit and peruse her website.

Also, thank you to Angie for your photography skills! You guys can check out more of her photos here.

I’m so glad to be back in the blogging game, and I can’t wait to share even more with you guys! There’s more to come, and I’m so excited for what’s in store. I love you all so so much, and until next time…

Stay Fab,

Sunny Days and an Endless Summer

Happy Tuesday, friends! Welcome to another Studded Collar article where we shall experience another excerpt from my style journey. (:

We are now in the heart of summer, and it’s crazy to think that I am already half way through my summer break! I have been out, about, and on the run ever since I was let out for summer break, and now that I’m approaching the halfway mark, I’m realizing how much I’m wishing for an endless summer. I thought it would be nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle to take a trip to the park for a little bit. Plus, it was such a great excuse to wear my new Ray-Ban glasses from Ditto!

Dress: H&M | Shoes: Target | Sunglasses: RayBan c/o Ditto

Photography: Rachel Brown

IMG_3092 IMG_3104IMG_3125This is such a simple look that is quick and easy to throw on while still looking put together. Dresses can be as casual as can be, but with the right accessories like these Ray-Bans in the style 4171 Erika, you can look even cooler on the hottest of summer days. This is one of my favorite summer dresses, and I think these simply chic glasses took my outfit to the next level.

OOTN: Leaf It to Me

Hey there, friends! I hope you all are having a wonderful day or evening and are taking it easy this weekend.

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the Stanley Korshak Shakiversary party to celebrate the store’s one year anniversary of being in its new space. Check out my recap of the festivities here!

IMG_2096Happy SHAKiversary, Stanley Korshak!

I had just as much fun at the party as I did getting ready, so I thought to share with you guys my outfit and makeup details with you all.IMG_2128

I decided to go with a dark brown, smokey and earthy look. I thought that the colors would marry well with my leafy green romper and tan accentsIMG_2130

1. After applying my foundation and loose powder, I applied a bronze shadow all over my lid.

2. I then used an angled blush to apply a matte, dark chocolate-brown shadow on the outer half of my lid.

3. Next, I took a matte, medium shaded brown and applied it in my crease for definition.

Beauty Tip: After I applied the brown shadows to my outer corners and my crease, my bronze shadow was lost under the matte colors. Because I wanted my bronze shadow to pop more and brighten my eye, I re-applied the bronze shadow a little bit more with a smaller, angled shadow brush. The angle and small size helped to make my application more precise.

4. Once my shadows had set, I used black liquid liner on my eyelid to create a thick winged look. There are so many ways to create a winged liner look, so sound off in the comments or like this article if you would like for me to post a tutorial!

Beauty Tip: To make sure that your liquid liner won’t smudge, crease, or fade throughout the day or night, once the liner has dried, set it with a matching colored shadow! This will make your eyeliner last so much longer and maintain a fresh look.

5. I brushed and shaped my brows, and, to ensure that they stayed in place, I brushed them with a bit of clear brow gel. I filled my brows in with a mix of dark brown and black brow powder; dark brown alone would be a tad too light, and black alone would be too harsh.

6. Finally, I applied a red-brown liquid lipstick to go with the earthy look.

Now, let’s move on to the outfit details!

IMG_2148

Romper: H&M | Blazer: Jessica Simpson | Shoes: Steve Madden | Purse: Ralph Lauren | Necklace: Forever 21 |

IMG_2135 IMG_2140 IMG_2138IMG_2141

I simply can not get over this romper from H&M’s Conscious line- it’s so fun and perfect for the summer. Rompers are pretty tricky because you are basically wearing a top and bottom sewn together in one size, so you can’t pick and choose the size of the top and bottom. This, however, is the first romper that I have tried on and loved the fit. Not only is the tailoring close to perfect, this leafy romper is very comfortable! I added the tan belt to define my waist a bit more because without it, the romper appeared to be a straight cut. The addition of a belt to most outfits is a great way to quickly add some shape and provide the illusion of an hourglass figure.
IMG_2152 IMG_2146 IMG_2144

My favorite part of this romper has to be the leaf pattern. It is such a fresh, fun look, and I think it could definitely be dressed up or down! For the party, I wore it in a more formal and dressy fashion, but I can’t wait to wear it again and try out a more casual look! I’ll update you all on how that goes… (:
IMG_2143

Thank you guys so much for reading, and I hope you liked the mini makeup tutorial! Like and/or comment on this post is you would like for me to do more makeup tutorials, and also let me know what other types of articles you all would like to see from me! I love you guys so so much, and until next time…IMG_2149

Stay Fab,

Happy SHAKiversary!

Hello hello, sweet sunshines, and happy Friday! I hope you all are having a wonderful start to your weekend. I have been so busy recently, and just returned from a week in California! It was my first time to visit the Sunshine State, and I am already looking forward to the next time I can travel out there. I’ll be sharing a recap of my visit soon, so be on the look out for that! (:

Until then, I want to share with you all my recap of last night’s events. Stanley Korshak is a high-end store in Dallas that sells designer clothing for men and women such as Alice+Olivia, Rag and Bone, and Zac Posen. Stanley Korshak also sells bridal gowns and home goods. A year ago this weekend, Stanley Korshak revamped their setting and opened up in a new space, so of course they hosted a party with The Perennial Style sisters and Young Teens Against Cancer to celebrate their one year SHAKiversary! IMG_2096IMG_1803 IMG_1805 IMG_1798_2 It was my first time into the new store, and it is a gorgeous space. The layouts are fresh, clean, and fun, the store is bright and vibrant with its abundance of lights and windows, and most importantly, the clothing, shoes, and accessories are to die for, of course! IMG_1800_2 IMG_1799_2 IMG_1812 IMG_1814_2

How cute is this layout! I love the three varying dress styles as well as the feminine and artistic backdrop for the center mannequin.

IMG_1822 IMG_1823_2

It’s all in the details: What I noticed is that parts of the store are sectioned according to the designer. I think that is such a great detail that can be appreciated as it makes the shopping experience so much easier and more enjoyable for shoppers!

IMG_1824

The entirety of the front half and back half of the store is lined with tall windows from the floor to the ceiling. It provided such a welcoming and lively ambience.

IMG_1829 IMG_1825_2

The jewelry at the Shak varied from simple to formal and would suit anyone’s style! Definitely one of my favorite parts of the store. IMG_1867IMG_2095I had the chance to catch up with the Flowers sisters (from left to right: Ellen Flowers, Janie Flowers, and Blair Flowers) of the Perennial Style, and it was so lovely to see them again. They all looked gorgeous as usual and were as sweet as ever!

I had such a wonderful time at the SHAKiversary party, and I look forward to what the next year holds for Stanley Korshak! Thank you so much to Ellen Flowers for extending an invitation to me. What a great event it was! If you want details about what I wore to the party, check out my outfit post here! If you liked this article, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe! Feel free to check out my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to keep up with me when I’m not blogging away. Thanks a bunch for reading, my loves, and until next time… IMG_1898 Stay Fab, Kay B xx.

Sweet Valentine: Daytime Look

Hello, hello, hello my darlings, and Happy New Year!! I apologize for being unable to ring in the new year with you all and for the low supply of new posts, but you know well enough that I am never far from you and return as quickly as possible. (: I hope that 2014 holds fond memories for you all and that new ventures, lessons and sweet times lie ahead in 2015.

Welcome to my first post of 2015! (cue the confetti) With the first major holiday of the year already a month behind us, we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to. Yes, even if you do not have a significant other you can still expect to have fun on V-Day! Whether you will be spending the day with your lovie or taking on the town with your best girl friends, you can still look killer while doing it.

IMG_4642[1]

Dress: H&M | Shoes: Steve Madden | Jewelry: Charming Charlie | Nail Polish: Maybelline ColorShow

Valentine’s Day dawns the most pink, red and white than any other day of the year, but you do not necessarily need to put together an outfit that makes you look like you covered yourself in glue and frolicked through Hallmark’s Valentine’s Day isle. I’ve put together a daytime look that is perfect to wear while with your girls or your boyf and it includes the festive colors in a more wearable fashion. (:

IMG_4648 IMG_4649

Note that my dress is not all red, white, or pink, but within the pattern, pink is the predominant color. I accented my look with neutral-toned, gemed jewelry to add a touch of formality. The look is sweet, feminine, and is perfect for a fun day with your special loves.

IMG_4654

Believe it or not, this is my first bubble skirt purchase (a bubble skirt is one that comes out at the dress’s waist line and has a rounded figure), and I really like it! I appreciate the placement of the waistline- dresses that have their wait’s seam at your natural waist are some of the most flattering as opposed to an empire wait that makes your torso, at times, appear smaller and your mid-section wider (depending on your body type).

IMG_4655 IMG_4656 IMG_4657 IMG_4658

When wearing a dress as busy as this, it’s best to choose a solid colored shoe. That’s not to say that the shoe itself can’t make it’s own statement. These suede, ankle-strap, open toed platforms from Steve Madden are simple in their neutral tone, but don’t fail to stand out with its thick straps and heel.

IMG_4660 IMG_4659 IMG_4668 IMG_4669IMG_4653

I opted for a soft, romantic look since this is a daytime outfit. I love how the muted fuchsia lip pops but doesn’t appear harsh with the other softened makeup features. A light rosy blush and a soft smoky eye married beautifully with this ensemble. Like this post and comment below if you want to see this make-up tutorial!

IMG_4664 IMG_4662 IMG_4661

Just some candids of me being… well, me. (:

Well, my darlings, that’s all I have for you today! I hope this inspired you somehow and that you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed putting this together for you. Remember that regardless of whether or not you have a Valentine, you should show some extra love to others- it’s what keeps our world moving after all!

What to Wear: Wedding Edition

Here comes the bride… all dressed in white!

Wedding season is here and I can practically hear the wedding bells and smell the designer tulle. While I am only sixteen and have quite a while until I’ll be walking down the isle (though that hasn’t stopped me from making some dream plans here or there…), I do have some guidance to offer regarding what to wear to the grand affair.

What to Wear: Wedding Edition

Looking at each of these looks, you may have noticed that they all have a bit of a floral, light, and airy theme to them. As I put these together for you, I thought about how weddings are light, bright and beautiful new beginnings, and, in a way, that can translate through fashion and, ultimately, what you wear to a wedding! Spring and Summer are wedding season, after all, so floral and flowy dresses are beyond appropriate.
There is a level of formality that should be met when choosing what to wear to a wedding, and I hope the outfits above give you some guidance. Just a few tips– I personally choose to never wear a pure white outfit to a wedding; that’s the bride’s job (: Also, dresses should be no shorter than 1.5 to 2 inches above the knee (depending on how tall you are).
What to Wear_Wedding Season Favorites
Looks 1, 2, and 4 in particular are perfect for outdoor weddings. The style of these dresses is suitable for an indoor and outdoor affair, and the material is less heavy, but light enough for an outdoor wedding.
Which of these ensembles above is your favorite? My faves are looks 1, 2 and 4 above- so cute! If you want to find any of the items in the outfits I put together, then just click the desired image below! My personal faves include the bold blue Steve Madden heels, the cream Nasty Gal crossbody purse, and the Topshop Laura Dress! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog, follow my Instagram, Twitter, Polyvore, like me on Facebook, you know the drill! Until next time…
