In With the New + Kendra Scott!

Hello friends, and happy Thursday!

This is a bit of a different post for you all, but as I said before, I have some new additions coming to TSC, and slowly but surely you guys are going to see (and hopefully love) the changes.

Here’s the first order of business…

I’m super excited to announce the launch of The Studded Collar Youtube channel! I had a channel before, Days With Kay, which was strictly for vlogs. On this blog’s channel, I’ll be sharing daily vlogs as well as lookbooks, Q&A’s, lifestyle & beauty videos, fashion videos, interviews, and so much more. I can’t wait to bring some of my ideas to life and share them with you all!

I also want to hear what you guys have to say! Be sure to follow all my social media links (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and now Youtube) so that we can interact with each other and I can chat with you all! I want to know what videos you would like to see as well as any questions you may have. I love staying in touch with you guys as my viewers, readers, and friends, so don’t be afraid to reach out to me!

Today I’ve posted my first ever TSC video, and I want you guys to see it! The first vlog that I’ve decided to upload is actually from a little while back, but I chose to upload today for a special reason. Yesterday, Kendra Scott released their Summer 2017 collection, and it’s absolutely gorgeous, as always to be expected from the brand. I had the chance to visit their headquarters in Austin and tour the office, which was such a cool opportunity that I had to vlog it to share with you guys! I also got to see the new Summer collection a few weeks early while I was there, which was awesome.

I’ve gone ahead and linked the video below, so go ahead and watch it on the new channel! Don’t forget to subscribe, as this is where all my videos are going to be uploaded from now on- I know you don’t want to miss out. (:

Thank you all so much for reading (and watching), having your support means a lot to me! I love you guys bunches, and can’t wait until next time…

Monthly Lovelies: Mad Jewels Spring Collection 2015

Bonjour, mes petites croissantes! How are you all? Well, I hope! I’ve been a little under the weather, but never fear, this is a nice opportunity to get some more writing in, yes? There’s always an upside in my world (:

In my last article I shared with you my interview with Madison Patrylick, the designer behind MadJewels. I also mentioned her current Spring Collection, which, if I do say so myself, is quite impeccable. I’ve been loving on the MadJewels designs a TON this month, so here are some of the pieces from the line that I can assure you are some of the cutest accessories out there.

Necklaces

What I love about these necklaces is that regardless of how elaborate or simple, there’s a style for everyone’s taste. These pieces can also easily be dressed up or dressed down.

Ok, these are absolutely to DIE for. The tasseled earrings are a great way of  translating the fringe/tassel trend to jewelry. The vibrant color is also a great way to liven up any look. Each of these pieces are so classy and organic, but the pair that stands out the most to me is the Sting Ray Ear Jackets in Black. It’s simple, but edgy (a great pairing with the Sandstorm Tassel Necklace), and the coolest part is that the earring itself is a sphere, and the backing is an even larger sphere. How cool is that? Very trendy.

On the Radar: Madison Patrylick of MadJewels

Hello, hello, hello, loves! I’m baaaack! Boy, have I been absent lately. You can hear those crickets chirping loud and clear… and let’s clean those cobwebs out of here, please! Geez Louise, I have to dust off this keyboard, too…

Oh, but all jokes aside, I have been insanely busy lately. As a student, school is a huge priority for me, and junior year has been anything but a cakewalk, but I’ve gotten to a point where I can return to my pink Studded Collar throne and grace my bloggy kingdom with my presence once more. (:

Now, I’m very excited to return with this article. Late last year I met a sweetheart of a designer named Madison Patrylick.

madison patrylick prof pic

Madison is the driving force, founder, and designer behind the company MadJewels. From designing safety-pin bracelets for her grandparents at the age of eight, to the launch of her vibrant jewelry company in 2011, Mrs. Patrylick has come a long way in her career. MadJewels specializes in hand crafted jewelry using gorgeous, high quality, natural materials and gemstones. I had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Patrylick about her company, her business advice, and some of her fashion must-haves. Keep reading to learn more about the face of MadJewels!

Kay B: How would you describe your brand? What sets your jewelry apart from others and makes it unique?

Madison Patrylick: Mad Jewels is bohemian chic and very bright. I think jewelry should bring out the brightness in your personality, and is really is a way of further expressing who you are as a person. Mad Jewels is unique compared to many other jewelry brands because it is BRIGHT. I am not afraid to use color, and I really love a good piece that pops.

Kay: Take me through a typical day in the life of a jewelry designer.

Madison: Oh gosh, every day is different! The to-do list is always a mile high; we are busy working on shipping out web orders, filling orders for our retail stores, heading to market to restock on supplies, designing new styles for upcoming collections, photographing new pieces, putting them into catalogs and lookbooks, marketing, social media, accounting, attending trade shows all over the country, and so much more.  There are so many business aspects separate from actually designing and putting a piece together, and most people don’t realize that!

Kay: What do you prefer about working for yourself versus working under someone? What are the pros and cons?

Madison: PROS: Love being able to spend time with my husband and daughter on a regular basis. She is the most important thing I have done in my life and always my priority. Working for yourself also allows you to be able to work when you feel most inspired or most productive, rather than being chained to a desk 8 hours a day.

CONS: I 150% miss receiving a regular paycheck, a Christmas bonus, and healthcare benefits. It’s way more expensive to be self-employed. I am now in charge of employees, so I have to make sure they come to work on time and do what they’re supposed to, so that the company isn’t losing money.

Kay: What has it taken to develop your brand into what it is today?

Madison: Blood, sweat, and tears…literally. I have stayed up until 3 am some nights completing orders, and have ended up with bloody fingers at the end of some days after making so many pieces of jewelry. It is very trying at times, and I have to constantly find the tenacity and will to keep going – and not throw the towel in.

When I have to travel for trade shows, it’s really difficult being away from my family and young daughter, but it has allowed Mad Jewels to meet so many new buyers and grow our rapidly expanding boutique stores that carry our line.

I have also made a lot of mistakes, and you have to quickly learn from them, get up and keep moving forward. But, as the saying goes: “Nothing worth while ever comes easy.” I can honestly say that I am doing what I love, so most of the time, it doesn’t feel like “work.”

Kay: It must be nice to be your own boss and manage your company- what advice do you have for young women who want to follow that path and start their own business?

Madison: It is great to be your own boss, but you have to be very disciplined! I would say be extremely organized; this is something I still struggle with. I am constantly reorganizing each and every day and finding new ways to stay “put together” within our office. Time management is a MUST. I have a detailed calendar and tend to certain business aspects at specific times during the week, such as planning out our collections, etc.

I also would advise anyone who is interested in running their own business to research in depth what type of costs up front they should expect, as well as save up money or have something else on the side to be able to live off of.  In new business ventures, the first few years are “startup” years, and most businesses put just about every dollar earned back into the business without paying themselves in order to continually grow.

Kay: How did you get the name for your company, Mad Jewels?

Madison: My dad called me “Mad,” short for Madison, growing up – so it fell right in. I do have to say though, when I am out or people say, “Oh, there’s Mad about Jewels,” it drives me craaaazy. It’s Mad Jewels, just like a first name and last name.

Kay: What is your favorite collection that you’ve created thus far, and which piece is your favorite overall?

Madison: Honestly, I would say our upcoming Summer Collection is probably my favorite. The La Dulce Vida collection for summer has neons and brights, paired with neutrals and everyday gems – so it really does have something for every occasion. Oftentimes, to get through working nonstop, I keep my head always “at the beach,” so I associate this collection very much with me being on a beach in my cute baubles and a bikini — rather than stuck in the office working. 🙂 My favorite pieces are the Serenity bracelets; they’re bone, freshwater pearls, hematite and quartz. Quartz is a great healing stone, and these are just neutral enough you can wear with a t-shirt and jeans or paired with brighter bracelets and a fun outfit.

Kay: Do you have any fashion, style, or beauty trends that you’re really liking right now?

Madison: I LOVE FRINGE! Leather, suede, lace – all of the textures done in more feminine ways are so hot right now. I am also loving the combat boots look for cooler temps. I own several pairs of gladiator sandals, too; I bought my first pair when I lived in Spain in 2006 before they were a “thing” in the States. To me, gladiators can take your typical sundress into something amazing.

As for beauty trends, I’ve been rocking purple lips lately! Its a very bright purple, and so fun for summer; I feel like it makes my blue eyes really pop!

Kay: If you could only keep 3 items in your purse, what would they be and why?

Madison: Burt’s Bees Chapstick (because I’m always chewing my lips when I’m deep in thought), my wallet (duh, I might need to buy stuff!), and a camera to snap pics of my cute little nugget…. I would love to not have to carry my phone around and be able to “disconnect” more, actually!

Kay: What is your favorite item in your closet, and what staple item do you believe every girl needs to have in her closet?

Madison: I recently purchased a vegan leather jacket that has a slightly wider shoulders, which balances out my hips! I am really loving pairing it with just about everything for an edgier look. I think every girl needs a cozy white and black v-neck, a well fitting pair of jeans, and a pair of killer gladiator sandals. AND OF COURSE, TONS OF MAD JEWELS!

Kay: From where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

Madison: I find inspiration all over the place! My daughter inspires me quite often; she’s so young that she makes me really take a step back sometimes to enjoy my surroundings and notice the little things in life a bit more than I ever have.

I also love getting color inspiration from my travels all over the world. Japan (and Asia) is probably where I’ve drawn most inspiration from, because they are a very vibrant culture and even their landscapes seem to have so much more color to me than many other places in the world. For example, our Belissima Hoops were inspired by the cherry blossoms that are a specific shade of pink; the labradorite ovals pick up so many hues of blue and iridescence that can be seen in the ever changing sky.

Kay: What do you hope for the future of Mad Jewels?

Madison: My long term goal is to be a household name! Ultimately, I want to have retail storefronts where anyone can come in and dress themselves up in our jewels, or send their man (or woman) in for sweet little gifts from the heart!

Kay: Have you faced any hurdles as a female business/company owner, and how have you overcome these obstacles?

Madison: Honestly, off the top of my head, I cannot think of any obstacles I have encountered just from being a woman. There are a lot of powerful women out there today, and so much of the fashion industry is run by strong women, I think I would be surprised if I did. My biggest obstacle in general as a business owner, is people underestimating all the things it takes to run our company; I don’t just sit at my desk and make jewelry to sell…it’s so much more than that.

Kay: What are the most important lessons you have learned in business and do you think these are applicable in everyday situations?

Madison: What a great question! Always listen to your gut, always. If it doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not.  On the contrary, if you feel like its right, then don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

Don’t get caught up in the bigger picture, and work on everything a little bit at a time — Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I also need to learn how to not be so hard on myself. I am my biggest critic, so sometimes I get caught up in things that maybe I haven’t been able to accomplish yet, and have to sometimes take a step back to regroup and say “Wow, I did that!” I think absolutely any “life lesson” overflows into a good business model and vice versa. At the end of the day, YOU are your business when it comes down to it. So how you treat your customers, employees and how you handle everyday situations is basically the same for your business.

Sweet Valentine: Daytime Look

Hello, hello, hello my darlings, and Happy New Year!! I apologize for being unable to ring in the new year with you all and for the low supply of new posts, but you know well enough that I am never far from you and return as quickly as possible. (: I hope that 2014 holds fond memories for you all and that new ventures, lessons and sweet times lie ahead in 2015.

Welcome to my first post of 2015! (cue the confetti) With the first major holiday of the year already a month behind us, we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to. Yes, even if you do not have a significant other you can still expect to have fun on V-Day! Whether you will be spending the day with your lovie or taking on the town with your best girl friends, you can still look killer while doing it.

IMG_4642[1]

Dress: H&M | Shoes: Steve Madden | Jewelry: Charming Charlie | Nail Polish: Maybelline ColorShow

Valentine’s Day dawns the most pink, red and white than any other day of the year, but you do not necessarily need to put together an outfit that makes you look like you covered yourself in glue and frolicked through Hallmark’s Valentine’s Day isle. I’ve put together a daytime look that is perfect to wear while with your girls or your boyf and it includes the festive colors in a more wearable fashion. (:

IMG_4648 IMG_4649

Note that my dress is not all red, white, or pink, but within the pattern, pink is the predominant color. I accented my look with neutral-toned, gemed jewelry to add a touch of formality. The look is sweet, feminine, and is perfect for a fun day with your special loves.

IMG_4654

Believe it or not, this is my first bubble skirt purchase (a bubble skirt is one that comes out at the dress’s waist line and has a rounded figure), and I really like it! I appreciate the placement of the waistline- dresses that have their wait’s seam at your natural waist are some of the most flattering as opposed to an empire wait that makes your torso, at times, appear smaller and your mid-section wider (depending on your body type).

IMG_4655 IMG_4656 IMG_4657 IMG_4658

When wearing a dress as busy as this, it’s best to choose a solid colored shoe. That’s not to say that the shoe itself can’t make it’s own statement. These suede, ankle-strap, open toed platforms from Steve Madden are simple in their neutral tone, but don’t fail to stand out with its thick straps and heel.

IMG_4660 IMG_4659 IMG_4668 IMG_4669IMG_4653

I opted for a soft, romantic look since this is a daytime outfit. I love how the muted fuchsia lip pops but doesn’t appear harsh with the other softened makeup features. A light rosy blush and a soft smoky eye married beautifully with this ensemble. Like this post and comment below if you want to see this make-up tutorial!

IMG_4664 IMG_4662 IMG_4661

Just some candids of me being… well, me. (:

Well, my darlings, that’s all I have for you today! I hope this inspired you somehow and that you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed putting this together for you. Remember that regardless of whether or not you have a Valentine, you should show some extra love to others- it’s what keeps our world moving after all!

Happy Homecoming + Style Steal

Hello, my loves, guess who’s back? Yours truly, of course.

For those of you who thought I had slowly faded away from the fashion/ blogging scene, let it be known that I am still quite present and am always on the scene. The month of October was probably my busiest of the academic year thus far (granted that it’s only been three months) and TSC had to take the backseat. Don’t fret, darlings, I am back from my fashion blogger’s coma and going at full speed ahead, so get ready for a fun ride.

This past week was one of Homecoming celebrations- from the Homecomig Dance, to homecoming week, to game this past Friday, everyday had something fun in store. Of course I have to let you in on the part you are all dying to know about- what I wore to the dance! I’m really excited to show you guys because I’m really in love with the ensemble I put together. The best part- it’s a Style Steal!! So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

IMG_2338[1] IMG_2202[1]IMG_2203[1]

Dress: Teeze Me | Necklace and Earrings: Swarovski | Ring: Gifted | Shoes: Steve Madden

Before any of you smarty-pants out there start saying, “You’re wearing a pastel and that’s a spring/summer color! What kind of Fashion Guru are you!” Pipe down little ones, what I’m wearing actually isn’t light enough to be a pastel. This gorgeous ice blue dress with sheer lining, pleating, and tulle underlay made me feel like an absolute princess.

I love the positioning of the waistband that cinches my waist in and the way it meets the point of the triangular sheer material in the center of the dress’s bustier! Claps for Teeze Me, this design is very flattering! It’s a great combination of femininity and class, and then light, mod edge with the sky high strapped platforms from Mr. Madden. (:

IMG_2188[1] IMG_2085[1]

Enjoy the absolutely necessary shoe picture and grand “Hoco Selfie” with me and these beautiful ladies. ❤

Now, do any of you know of a lady by the name of Lupita Nyong’o? Well this wonderful actress has quickly become a style icon and a particularly breathtaking blue Prada dress of hers has become quite iconic as well. If you know the breathtaking garment that I am referring to, then you know that Ms. Nyong’o and I are practically twins. Here comes the Style Steal!

IMG_2241[1]

Lupita’s dress is known far and wide as one of the most amazing to grace the red carpet. With a few modest differences, my dress easily parallels her own and can be viewed as Prada Jr. Lupita’s plunging neck line is mimicked in my own dress but my garment  has a sheer overlay covering my chest (Modest is hottest, ladies). The pleating, though more pronounced in my dress’s skirt, is quite similar to M. Nyong’o’s. Finally, because my dress is short, I opted for drop earrings rather than studs for a healthy and fashionable balance and matching drop-pendant necklace.

Homecoming this year was so much fun, and I couldn’t be happier with the way my look turned out. What did you wear to homecoming? Tell me in the comments below or tweet me pictures @StuddedCollar! As Homecoming season and October have come to a close (Happy November!), I am so happy to welcome the cool weather and the holiday season. I just know that this will be quite a fun, fabulous, and fashionable one. I’ve got some fun in store for you guys, and would love to hear your ideas for posts! Comment some ideas or tweet me, reach me on Facebook, Instagram, you know the drill… (: Well, let the holiday fun begin! Keep smiling, beauties. Until next time…

Roman Holiday

Good Morning lovelies,

This post is long overdue, but I have been crazy busy lately with the school year coming to a close and pushing through the last few weeks (month and a half, really, but saying ‘weeks’ makes it seem more bearable.) On the first Sunday of April, my mother and I attended a Mother/ Daughter Fashion show, and the theme was Roman Holiday. I have to say my outfit was one of my favorite pieces that I’ve put together, and I just had to share it with you all.

March Lovelies

Hi everyone!

Well, it’s been settled- I’m an awful person. I’m sorry, I just… give me a minute.

Ok. I’m back.

I know I promised to do monthly lovelies every month, but here we are, on April Fool’s Day, the first of the month, and I skipped my February lovelies. I’m sorry everyone. I wish it were an April Fool’s joke, but this is the hard cold truth…

But we can’t cry over spilled milk, right? We just need to clean up and move on… to my MARCH LOVELIES!

*P.S- I’m doing a different format than January’s post, but let me know which you like better: the images made on Polyvore, or my own photos? Or possibly a mix of both? Just tell me what you’d like to see (:

Gel Nail Polish

This is was my first gel manicure- got them done for my birthday and absolutely loved them!

This is was my first gel manicure- got them done for my birthday and absolutely loved them!

The story behind me getting a gel manicure is actually a funny not-so-funny story… I decided to experiment with stick on nails the day of my sixteenth birthday party. Of course, as all last minute tasks end, it was a disaster. The tips of my fingers were coated in the stinky adhesive and I was about to have a hernia at the thought of my nails being amputated on my birthday. My sweet mother calmed me down and booked a last-minute-rush nail appointment with her nail tech and she worked her magic! My nails looked gorgeous, and the polish lasted and shone for a good 2 1/2 weeks! (Until I managed to pick it all away due to nerves… of course I would manage to do that…) If you want a mani that lasts, go for the gel! Note to all: STEER CLEAR OF STICK ONS!

Rose Gold Jewelry

I have a necklace like this, but rather than an infinity symbol, it's a jewel encrusted cross

I have a necklace like this, but rather than an infinity symbol, it’s a jewel encrusted cross

I’ve always preferred silver jewelry, but one of my best friends bought a rose gold necklace for me as a 16th birthday gift, and I’ve loved Rose Gold ever since. I’ll post a picture of it in my birthday haul, but it looks like the necklace above, but the infinity sign is replaced with a horizontal cross. It has little diamonds on it, and is strung onto a rose gold chain. I absolutely love it and I wear it every day. I know most believe that gold is an outdated colour, but look closely– honey, that’s not gold. It has a rosy tint to make the yellow tones less harsh. This modernizes the material and it’s just as popular as silver.

Colour Smart: If you have fair skin or even an olive tone, this will look best on you as opposed to silver. You’re tone will look warmer and more vibrant.

Wristlets/Money Purses

I actually have this same wristlet... sorry the picture isn't as artsy :-/ #ohwell

I actually have this same wristlet… sorry the picture isn’t as artsy :-/ #ohwell

I just recently got two wristlets, and I usually don’t use them because I prefer crossbodies, standard purses, or totes- they’re practical, stylish, and carry everything I need! I will admit, though, that I’ve been using the wristlets a lot, especially to school. Carrying a tote or any other large purse with a backpack and other miscellaneous items is not that easy… They’re really great to hold my keys, various cards, cash, etc. and they have just as much style as the next bag! I recommend this mainly to students because we are constantly on the go, and when you are going out more leisurely, then grab that handbag and work it, darling!

Nail Polish

When my nails are on point, my life is on point. Enough said.

When my nails are on point, my life is on point. Enough said.

No one wants to walk around naked. Well, neither do my nails. I must always have my nails done, and if they aren’t done, then I feel like a part of me is missing. If you’re laughing to yourself alone in your room right now at the fact that this crazy British girl thinks her nails are naked when they’re not done, then stop. Right now. It’s a serious matter. Anyway, I’ve been trying some different colours that I wouldn’t normally use, like Metro Chic (a gray colour) by Sephora, and I’ve been loving them. I just love how my nails look once they have a fresh coat of nail polish, because when they’re done, I have my whole life together. Same goes for my hair. Moving on.

8tracks

It's like Pandora and Spotify combined. It's magic, pretty much.

It’s like Pandora and Spotify combined. It’s magic, pretty much.

Alright, here is a non-beauty/fashion related lovely- 8tracks! I’ve been using it for a while now, but I just recently got really into it. Basically, it’s a free internet music radio service in which you select a mood, genre, or artist, and it will generate/ pull up playlists that match your selections! When using it on the computer, you can have up to three selections, and on your phone you have only two. Depending on how you look at it, that could be a pro or a con. To me, it doesn’t ever matter because, I kid you not, the accuracy of the music they pull for you is incredible! If you’re happy and want to get pumped in the morning, they have the perfect playlist for you. The best part- you can create your own playlists with the music you want. Add some tags depending on the feel of your mix, and others can listen to it! It’s truly amazing, but don’t take my work for it, try it for yourself!

Flappy Birds

No description can do this game justice. You could say we have a love/hate relationship.

No description can do this game justice. You could say we have a love/hate relationship.

I have no description for this but that this game… has truly tested my emotions. All I ask is that you don’t judge me because I know we have all been emotionally invested in this game at one point or another.

Well, those are all of my Monthly Lovelies for March! If you guys have any of the same favourite items, or want to share yours with me, please feel free to comment down below! I promise I’ll post more regularly from now on (both in the Monthly Lovelies and everything else, haha) Don’t forget to check out all of my social media, you can find them under “Contact Me” in the Menu Bar! Until next time, my loves…
