Lady in Black: NYFW Edition

Hey hey, my darlings. Happy September and Happy Studded Collar Sunday! It’s crazy how fast time flies as we say goodbye to the summer and begin to welcome the fall season.

With the fall season comes New York Fashion Week, and this past Thursday, I was able to kick off the NYFW festivities in style with Allison Mitchell’s private preview party for her SS 2015/2016 Collection.

I opted for a classic look, and what’s more classic than a little black dress? I love that the chiffon overlay of this dress is tea-length while the thicker dress layer underneath is knee-length. It adds a funky yet simple dimension to the look of the dress as well as modernizing what some like to think of as a “dated hemline.” I also really like that the dress combines a sleeveless cut with a turtleneck neckline. It’s simply unique and it makes this dress easier to transition from summer to fall- a richly colored jacket or coat over this number and come heeled booties would make this dress easy to “fall” for. (pun very much so intended.)

I wish you guys could have seen the back of this dress- it made what seems like a simple, black shift dress stellar. the turtleneck collar wraps around and becomes similar to a shirt collar in the back. Then, along the center and down the back of the dress, a gold hardware zipper lines the dress. To add to the impeccable details, the chiffon layer splits down the middle so that the gold zipper is visible and adds a kick to this outfit. I’ll have to share a picture of it with you guys so you can see it.IMG_3718 IMG_3720 IMG_3714IMG_3725 IMG_3713

My dress was black with gold detailing, my shoes were black with gold studded detailing, and even my eye makeup was pretty dark with a slight gold tint gracing my lids, so I definitely wanted to add some color to this ensemble. I went for red because it’s bold and contrasts beautifully with all the black and gold details. It wasn’t too much and added a great pop of color to an otherwise dark outfit.

Tip: If you want to vamp up your neutral or simple outfit, a bold statement necklace is definitely a lifesaver. If it’s in a bold color, pattern, or design and contrasts well when worn against one or two solid colors, you have a winner!

Putting together this outfit was almost as fun as the party was! It was so great to see Allison and her gorgeous handbags again, and I had so much fun catching up with old friends and making new ones like Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes. Fun fact she was the first fashion blogger that I knew about and read, and she had a hand in inspiring me to start TSC, so it was quite humbling to meet her- she is even lovelier in person and such a sweetheart. Be sure to check out her blog!

Allison worked long and hard on designing a gorgeous line for the coming year, and it definitely showed! Her work is impeccable, modern and definitely one of a kind. She designed her over-sized clutches to be functional, fashion-forward and different, and they definitely turn heads and get people talking. They’re made locally with dyed Connecticut calf hair, and you can see the quality in her work. It was pretty cool to see her bags before they made their debut on the runways of New York and Paris Fashion Week. If you want to see more of Allison’s work, head over to her website to check out the rest of her gorgeous bags for yourself!
